A Fume Hood Isn't a Standalone Device

What does this vacuum nozzle and a fume hood have in common?

They suck! But more importantly they are the user interface to a mechanical system. The best fume hood in the world can do NOTHING until it is connected to a laboratory ventilation system.  The fume hood is not a standalone device, its performance is highly dependent on room conditions controlled by the laboratory ventilation system.

Safe fume hood performance is highly dependent on the room conditions and user practices. When buying a fume hood, most people are victim to the marketing that says my hood is the best, it does this or that.  And yes some hoods are better than others, but the real driver of fume hood containment is the room and the user. Understand fume hood performance has to be looked at in a more holistically.
